SEA TURTLES Conservation I Guayabitos Nayarit Mexico (VIVE16.02)

PROJECT: Since 2014 Vive Mexico has organized this project in Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit with extraordinary results, the aim of these projects is to protect sea turtles with a team of biologists working in Guayabitos, Nayarit. Volunteers, biologists and locals create a team to perform various activities to ensure sea turtles survival for future generations. If you love nature, want to have a great time in beautiful beaches near the village, with all the amenities of a hotel and witness the magic spectacle of nature happenings since millions of years… then this project is for you! A team of biologists who are working with volunteers want to show you the charm of turtle’s life.

ACTIVITIES: The main job is to patrol the beach at night, working hours are around from 20:00 to 8:00, four days per week, this depends on the number of turtles that come ashore, it is recommended that volunteers come prepared to work these hours, depending on the number of volunteers involved in the project, two teams will be split allowing each group to have a day of work, a day off for recovery and two days off in weekends. Some of the activities to be performed are:

1. To find adult turtles and collect their eggs.

2. To move the eggs to a protected place called Vivero.

3. To release newborn baby turtles into the sea.

4. To patrol the beaches at night.

5. To make some reconstruction in the most important turtle camps from the region.

Together with a team of biologists from La Penita de Jaltemba, volunteers will seek turtles and will be in charge of taking care of their eggs, the team of biologists and local people are very friendly and working with them is always fun. We need motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in a project with sea turtles; the workplace depends on the beach where more turtles arrive, every day biologists will define which beach will be patrolled by volunteers.

HOSTING: Hotel in a shared room with all facilities at disposal, private bathroom, hot water, pool, WIFI, air conditioning.

LOCATION: Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico, located in the imposing Sierra Madre Occidental and bathed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Riviera Nayarit is emerging as one of the most attractive and magic destinations of Mexico. The area extends approximately 300 kilometers along the coast, integrated by mountainous jungle and facing coastal islands. For those seeking a more rural and rustic experience with magic beach towns in Mexico the Riviera has a massive open space for everyone along the Nayarit coast, also, for those who want to relax there are also quiet beaches and there are other beaches with heavy waves for surfers. In their free time volunteers can go and discover Bahia de Banderas, Nuevo Vallarta, Punta Mita, the astonishing Marietas Islands with hidden beaches in caves, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit.

Art for Everybody Zitacuaro, Michoacan Mexico (VIVE16.08)

PROJECT: During the FESTIVAL CULTURAL DE ZITACUARO “ARTE PARA TODOS”, 2016 EDITION, an “Art for Everybody Cultural Festival, 2016” we are looking for volunteers to collaborate as staff and support in carrying out a program of cultural and artistic activities in Zitacuaro Town, to encourage the use of public space and involve local residents in such activities through workshops and artistic exchanges to attract new and larger audiences for culture and arts. At the same time promote the production, assembly and distribution of different expositions, languages and artistic techniques to strengthen communication and cultural reunion of local inhabitants; raising the values of the community, promoting human development, making a stronger cultural identity of the unity in the diversity.

ACTIVITIES: Volunteers will help as staff in the development of the festival, which will take place during the months of May to October 2016; during the days of the project, volunteers will carry out activities such as:

1. To participate in logistics, assembly, distribution and exhibition of expositions, concerts, dance and theater shows where artists, children, youth and adults, as well as the general public will take part.

2. To collaborate in the production of urban art workshops and create workshops for children, youth and adults.

3. To collaborate in the mediation of roundtables with topics such as the importance of the recovery of public space, cultural policies, the right to culture, expressions of urban art, the benefits of culture and art as social development.

4. To assist in the achievement of taking 1,000 artistic photographs as acquisition for the municipality of Zitacuaro, inspired by the tangible and intangible belongings of the region for the massive exhibition “Foto Mural, Zitacuaro en 1000 imagenes”.

HOSTING: Youth Hostel in shared rooms, with all facilities at disposal WIFI, hot water, kitchen, showers.

LOCATION: Zitacuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, is a city with 155.534 located in a wooded area, famous for the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES: In their spare time, volunteers can go on their own to visit Zitacuaro’s downtown, the Cerrito de la Independencia, San Pancho, the pyramids of San Felipe Alzati, the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, volunteers can camp, hike, mountain bike, make some small trips and visit the archeological ruins or visit the indigenous communities of Mazahuas and Otomies.

Art Therapy for Children Morelia Michoacan Mexico (VIVE16.15)

Age: 18+

PROJECT: Cancer patients suffer not only physical discomfort, but also various psychological alters: depression and anxiety. In Mexico, cancer is the second leading cause of death, it is estimated that each year 7,000 new cancer cases occur in women under 20 years. Plastic art and music therapy can help cancer patients, this will help to have a better quality of life, to cope with their disease and get a better life. Volunteers will develop art therapy workshops helped by music and visual art, through various art techniques that brings benefits such as reflection, expression and relaxation. This activity is a process of self-expression, which helps patients to organize their internal reaction product of the events happening in their lives. These art therapy workshops, developed by volunteers and artists who work on a voluntary basis, will be an outlet to channel and express the point of view from patients without pressure, just being guided by artistic techniques. It is important that volunteers notice that we do not necessarily work with psychologists, since these therapies are occupational made by artists. No courses are given to volunteers by  any psychologist or psychiatrist.

ACTIVITIES: The activities are driven to benefit both patients and volunteers:

1. To conduct art therapy workshops in an organization who assists children with cancer disease; led by volunteers and professional artists on a voluntary basis for children and teenagers with cancer aged under 20 years old, where the subject is music.

2.  To create plastic works of sculpture and collage, inspired by specific musical pieces.

3.To raise public awareness through the pieces of art produced by children and tenagers with cancer.

4. To raise awareness through activities that involve the visual arts, so that volunteers contribute and help these fragile groups.

5. To ensure that volunteers and artists will contribute with their knowledge, time and effort to this vulnerable group.

HOSTING: In a youth hostel, shared rooms, WIFI, hot water and all facilities.

LOCATION: Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, besides being a beautiful city, it is the capital of Michoacan State, Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO hosted several cultural festivals (film, music, art).

LEISURE ACTIVITIES: In their spare time, volunteers can take a walk in downtown which has many cultural activities throughout the year, and discover the variety of historic buildings and monuments, for those looking to surround themselves by natural wonders, Morelia offers many options: 45 kilometers from Patzcuaro´s lake and the ancient pyramids of Tzintzuntzan, the magical towns of Cuitzeo, Patzcuaro, Santa Clara del Cobre, the islands of the Pancada, Janitzio among others that the native cultures identified as the border between worlds, and several ceremonial centers of the Mesoamerican pre-Hispanic times.
